Call for Applications: Public Accountability training for journalists in Northern Uganda

The African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME), in partnership with the Northern Uganda Media Club (NUMEC), invites journalists to apply for the Public Accountability Reporting Training, which will take place from September 24 to 26, 2025, in Gulu City, northern Uganda.

The Public Accountability training is designed to empower 15 early- to mid-career journalists based in northern Uganda with the capacity to provide in-depth and evidence-based coverage on public accountability issues with a focus on oversight, governance and service delivery. The three-day non-residential training is part of Media Support for Public Accountability and Civic Engagement (M-SPACE), a multi-donor programme and one of several civil society-led initiatives under the Partnership on Accountability and Civic Engagement (PACER), which is supported by the governments of Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Ireland through their embassies in Uganda.

Benefits of the training

  • The training will introduce trainees to the core meaning of public accountability and its role in fostering transparency in public service delivery.
  • Understanding key players and the main challenges within public service delivery.
  • Analysing case studies on public accountability issues in northern Uganda
  • Understanding ethical issues and legal issues surrounding public accountability reporting.
  • Learning how to craft effective story pitches.
  • Reporting compelling and impactful stories. 

Who can apply?

  • Early or mid-career journalists who are based in northern Uganda are encouraged to apply.
  • The journalist must have a passion for reporting issues related to public accountability, governance, or public affairs.
  • Female journalists are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Successful candidates will be required to attend all three training days.
