Thematic areas
The key thematic areas which form the platform for the operations of NUMEC and which guides the
implementation of this strategic plan are:
I. Capacity building of Journalists
II. Climate change
III. Gender Justice and Human Rights
IV. Freedom of expression and Safety of Journalists
V. Institutional Strengthening and Development

Program Approach
NUMEC deploys a mix of approaches in delivering her programs. These include:

– Capacity building of journalists through the delivery of high-quality mentorship and coaching on a
range of technical areas like a) news editing; b) reporting; c) writing; d) photography and f) use of
social media /digital platforms.
– Capacity building of journalists through training and participation in seminars and workshops
that are relevant to the thematic focus of NUMEC, this includes and in sectors and thematic issues
relevant to NUMECs work climate change, gender justice, human rights, freedom of expression
and safety of journalists, the electoral process, and good governance.
– Strategic Partnerships and Collaboration; These are with like-minded actors such as international
and local NGOs Universities, Journalism training institutions, and Associations of Journalists such as
Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Uganda Media
Association, Uganda Journalists Association, Uganda Media Women’s Association, Uganda Media
Development Foundation, Uganda Media Council, and others.
– Research: Generating evidence on NUMEC thematic areas for advancing knowledge and advocacy
on issues that resonate with NUMEC thematic areas of climate justice, gender justice change,
human rights, freedom of expression and safety of journalists, the electoral process, and good
governance.
– Promoting collaborative journalism within the region and transboundary especially on topic issues
of climate change, human rights and freedom of expression, and safety of journalists
– Integration of gender and human rights in all activities
– Providing journalism grants on public interest topics
– Operating a media resource center fully equipped with workstations, internet, utilities, and a press
conference facility
