Call For Story Pitches: Land Rights, Access & Usage Reporting

Background

The Northern Uganda Media Club (NUMEC) is an independent, non-partisan media development organization based in Gulu, northern Uganda. NUMEC’s mission is to revitalize the media terrain in northern Uganda and firmly integrate media and communications in the strategic objective of actors in the region. NUMEC has received a grant to support journalism in the region.

Who is eligible?

We want to support journalists working on new ideas that promote access to high-quality, public-interest journalism – particularly in rural areas in northern Uganda.

Specifically, we are looking for media solutions that improve access to information, public dialogue and participation for rural communities considering the great conflict between the Acholi and Madi people over Apaa land, destruction of Zoka forest, limited access to professional news media and low literacy rates.

Selection Criteria

  1. The individual is based in Northern Uganda
  2. Ideas serving disadvantaged social groups, and/or under-represented groups
  3. Stories covering Acholi, Lango & West Nile sub-regions
  4. A unique idea, building on a thorough understanding of the local/regional landscape

How to Apply

Applicants must present a one-page (Microsoft word) explanation of their story idea, the media outlet that he/she works for, why the story is important/rationale, a budget breakdown, and a story plan (including a timeline of expected completion, and publishing/broadcast) of the story. Application MUST be accompanied by a letter of support from your Editor.

The application is open to print, digital, photo, radio, TV, and citizen journalists.

Interested applicants must submit their application to NUMEC by email to info@numec.org copying charles.akena@gmail.com

DEADLINE is 5 PM on 15 July 2022. Only successful applicants will be contacted within two weeks after the submission of the story idea.
