Background
The Northern Uganda Media Club (NUMEC) is a leading media development organisation based in Gulu, northern Uganda. As the only major media development organisation outside Kampala, NUMEC plays a pivotal role in advancing press freedom, professional journalism, promoting cohesion among journalists and inclusive communications for peace and development. Through its media resource center, capacity building programs, and strategic partnerships, NUMEC empowers journalists, civil society, and communities to access information and amplify their voices. Guided by a newly established board of directors, NUMEC is strengthening its governance and institutional leadership for impactful programming and long-term sustainability. As such, the organisation seeks for a consultant to design and deliver a comprehensive orientation program for the board to ensure effective oversight and performance.
Objectives of the assignment
- Introduce governance roles, clarify the duties, responsibilities and legal obligations of board members.
- Strengthen leadership capacity by equipping the board with tools for effective decision-making and oversight.
- Foster teamwork, build cohesion and shared vision among board members.
- Align with NUMEC mission by ensuring board members understand NUMEC’s strategic priorities and operational context.
Scope of Work
- Design orientation modules that cover governance, fiduciary duties, fundraising, advocacy, stakeholder engagement and programming.
- Conduct board orientation and training
- Evaluate effectiveness by conducting a post-training assessment and recommend follow-up actions.
- Produce a board orientation and training report
Role of the Consultant
- Designing training modules/manual, incorporating elements of NUMEC’s memorandum and articles of association
- Ensure orientation and training is interactive
- Facilitate the board training
- Produce a report on the orientation/training and recommendations for strengthening the board.
Deliverables
- Training module
- Facilitated onboarding sessions.
- Post-training evaluation report.
- Recommendations for continuous board development.
Duration
The consultancy will run for 5 days to cover production of training materials, conducting the training and the training report. Subject to recommendations and funding, there may be flexibility for follow-up mentoring sessions for the board members.
Qualifications of Consultant
- Proven experience in nonprofit governance training.
- Knowledge of Uganda’s media sector, civil society environment and funding terrain
- Strong facilitation and communication skills.
- Knowledge of the northern Uganda context is an added advantage
Reporting
The consultant will report directly to the NUMEC Project Coordination and liaise with the Board Chairperson.
